Lizz and Justin Hills are residents and program facilitators at Wild Mountains environmental education centre, a community led organsiation reconnecting people to nature. In 2018 they completed a community build of a straw bale house in the Scenic Rim. They did this with the help of over 280 volunteers, 70-80% recycled or waste materials, and off grid. Then were successfully part of Sustainable House day in 2019, a nationally recognised day running for over 19 years. The two of them started their adventure into sustainable building over 10 years ago touring all over Australia and then over to Europe learning and practicing different methods of natural home building.
Justin in his capacity as designer and co-builder, and Lizz in the role of volunteer co-ordinator created a community of like minded people. The build lasted 5 years allowing the time to hand sculpt this house, and complete it the passive solar design with an earth floor. At the same time they were part of the volunteer staff, that run the internationally recognised Earthkeepers, Shapers of Tomorrow and other community focused environmental programs at Wild Mountains. Their combined passion for the natural world, the people around them and new ways of approaching collaboration is contagious.
