Synopsis

With the help of CNZ funding, award-winning children’s theatre company Birdlife Productions are creating a new puppet and music show using exquisite puppetry, live music, lots of joining in and giant caterpillar fun, promising a poignant experience for children and their whanau. Although it touches on feelings of sadness and grief, this show also encourages ‘letting go’ and laughter, resilience building and dealing with change, all metaphorically reflected by the life-cycle and metamorphosis of the Monarch Butterfly. Based on a children’s book by Ōtautahi/Christchurch author Dr Maysoon Salama, who wrote the story for her young granddaughter Aya, after Aya lost her father in the Christchurch Mosque attacks in 2019. Dr Salama has been working closely with Birdlife Productions as a cultural advisor and mentor, to help bring her story to the stage.
Designed for families and ideal for children aged 3 to 9 years, Aya’s story encourages compassion and empathy for different cultures, and helps us all become part of an important movement of change towards living together in peace.
Birdlife will engage the use of their trademark hand-made aesthetic as well as incorporating real-time on-stage digital projection, and the show is due to premiere at Circa in April 2024, with an additional South Island tour planned in July school holidays.

Synopsis

Hailed as "the cutest little show in Aotearoa", this is an exquisitely produced puppet show with interactive songs and percussion designed very specifically for ages 3 to 6 years and their parents or carers. With lots of joining in and calling out, the story takes children on a journey with Peter and his Nanna, who build a nesting box for Ruru – but Peter has to learn to be patient and wait to discover who will eventually come and nest in his 'Box of Birds'! And after all that waiting, Nanna takes Peter on an exciting night time forest walk by the light of the full moon! The bird characters are all familiar New Zealand locals, such as piwakawaka, kereru, tui and ruru, and the story introduces young children to the idea of supporting them and the different needs they may have. The story also embraces core principles that model positive behaviour and personal empowerment, as well as relationship and respect to whanau (particularly a Grandparent) and nature. Kindergarten Leaders and parents have been raving about this show and hundreds of New Zealand children have been transfixed by it. 'Box of Birds' enjoyed a near-sold out season at BATS Theatre in the winter school holidays, 2022.
