Dr Sarah Jane Moore is a creative artist who lives in lutruwita, Tasmania. Her PhD research at the University of Sydney (2016) for ‘Reconciliation using Music and Art’ drew on 30 years’ experience as an artist, arts worker, researcher, creative arts teacher and lecturer and explored song-writing and visual practice as tools to progress Reconciliation. She is an Adjunct Associate Lecturer within the Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) UNSW. In 2019 she was the ANAT on Country Synapse resident artist and this program enabled her to develop a deep and listening relationship with the Bandangi (Sydney Rock Oyster) and the Bandangi gu (Sydney Rock Oyster shell). With UNSW Indigenous Scientia Fellow Wiradjuri Scientist Laura Parker as her muse, Sarah Jane’s innovative interdisciplinary research dialogues celebrate oyster science through visual art practise, poetry and performance. She creates, worlds and sings with oysters so that others may visualise, listen and connect to Sea and River Country. In June 2020 she successfully secured an Australia Council CREATE grant to develop a body of work entitled Worlding with Oysters. Nestled in science, informed by land, river and sea stories, Sarah Jane’s creative practise imagines futures where reefs are plenty and oysters sing.
